Hindenburg sees red

Frankfort, May 20. — The German newspapers publish the complete text of the conversation which the American Captain MacMahon recently had with Field-Nasral Hindenburg.

« We will have our revenge against France », declared Hindenburg, « even if we had to wait a hundred years. The story repeats itself. My most ardent personal desire would be to take up arms again against the French. »

« You Americans behaved bravely during the battle, and afterwards, in a perfectly chivalrous manner. You have occupied the territories without showing hatred and resentment. This is what characterizes the true soldier! He throws himself with passion in the fray; but, once victory has been obtained, he finds no pleasure in administering kicks to the vanquished enemy. The French are today throwing the seed of hatred which, from generation to generation, will grow tremendously ! »

The Franco-German war of tomorrow is not the only one foreseen by the former German generalissimo. The latter considers a war between the United States and Japan as an inevitable fatality.

As for the technique of the future war, he expressed himself thus: — « The air fleet will undoubtedly play a great role in the battles of tomorrow: but the infantry will always remain the queen of battles. Airplanes can never hold a strategic line; they can never take a city or a railroad centre. The cavalry will turn into a kind of mounted infantry : but — I repeat — it is the infantry that will decide, as in the past, the fate of the war. »
