THE BURNING EARTHLOuest Éclair 1925 05 31 art 01 the burning earth in Tournemire Aveyron

RODEZ, May 30. In Tournemire, at the bottom of a small valley, the earth is burning. It's burning deep down. Those who venture into these parts cannot stay long without running the risk of having their feet scorched.
Father Teissier, Fathers Privat and Piques, learned geologists, examined this phenomenon. They could only observe the release of fumes from the Liassic rocks and the nauseating oozing of a heavy oil that evaporates instantly in the open air and gives the stone a shiny black patina.

And about the Tournemire train station, which was at the heart of the trade of the famous Roquefort cheese for over a century... We let it deteriorate, then:

  • "La gare du Roquefort",  Abandoned, listed for €155,000: the perfect opportunity to acquire an unusual property

Not to be confused with:

  • Tournemire in Cantal, a department in the north and bordering Aveyron. The two villages are 200 km apart by road and 130 km as the crow flies.
