THE BURNING EARTH
RODEZ, May 30. In Tournemire, at the bottom of a small valley, the earth is burning. It's burning deep down. Those who venture into these parts cannot stay long without running the risk of having their feet scorched. Father Teissier, Fathers Privat and Piques, learned geologists, examined this phenomenon. They could only observe the release of fumes from the Liassic rocks and the nauseating oozing of a heavy oil that evaporates instantly in the open air and gives the stone a shiny black patina.
