The discovery of a previously unknown Rembrandt is an event in the art world: the one whose name has just been established in London  the undeniable authenticity of which was marred by clumsy restorations was considered a copy of a Portrait of the Artist Drawing by Himself, which is in Dresden and which was not considered one of the best the master left us.
The portrait belonging to a London collector, stripped of the layers of paint that disfigured it, proves to be so superior, more vivid, and more profound, that it is the Dresden work that must henceforth be considered a copy, and it is already being eliminated from the list of canvases painted by the admirable artist. |
