The Death Diver Drowns
Polish diver Willy Wolf has recently gained a reputation as a fearless diver. About two months ago, he jumped from the transporter bridge into the Seine in Rouen. In recent days, he wanted to repeat this feat from the top of the transporter bridge in Nantes. The municipality had forbidden him, allowing him only to perform a few acrobatic exercises under the metal frame. But Willy Wolf ignored this and, in the presence of the many curious onlookers who had flocked to the banks of the Loire, jumped headfirst into the void. It is unclear what exactly happened during his descent in the racing car. He was probably blown away by the wind. In any case, he reached the water level with his body not upright, but sideways. Stunned by the impact, he was unable to recover: he sank to the ground without being able to swim. His body, swept away by the current, was found a few days later by fishermen from Le Pellerin. In connection with this tragically ended attempt, we can recall the names of famous athletes who have broken records for classical diving. Among them, we should mention the Englishman Taylor, who made a sinking dive of 25.5 meters underwater; the Englishman Finney, who swam 103 meters underwater; the Frenchman Peyrussou, who, in Joinville, plunged from a height of 31.48 meters into a depth of three meters; and the American Wrell, who threw himself from the top of the Brooklyn Bridge, a height of 46 meters, approximately the height of the Arc de Triomphe.
