BELGIUM IS MAKING A MAJOR EFFORT TO ERADICATE SLEEPING SICKNESS IN THE CONGO
Sleeping sickness is one of the plagues of tropical Africa; it is known that this disease is spread by a fly that thrives in the undergrowth. Subjects affected by this disease quickly descend into a state of complete decline. To combat this plague, veritable medical missions have been organized in the Congo, composed of doctors and nurses who enforce hygiene in a specific region and administer the necessary therapeutic injections to the natives against the disease. Until recently, 25,000 natives had already received injections of new products that appear to be very effective against sleeping sickness. A rate of cures has reportedly reached 40 to 50 percent. 100. It therefore seems that we are in a position, with the help of crusades similar to those being waged by Belgian doctors in the Congo, to sooner or later eradicate this terrible scourge of sleeping sickness. The efforts expended with such success by Belgium should be a lesson for us, for it is needless to repeat that, if we wish to derive all that we can hope for from our colonies, it is necessary to develop an active fight against the diseases that debilitate their populations.
