The Church of Montigny-les-MetzLÉclaireur du dimanche 1925 06 14 The stained-glass windows of the church of Montigny-les-Metz

The church of Montigny-les-Metz was built shortly before the war by German architects. After the armistice, the inhabitants of the small Lorraine town, anxious to preserve the stylistic unity of their church, entrusted the completion of the stained-glass windows to a painter from Wiesbaden, who had begun work.
However, as a good German patriot, the latter came up with the following joke as a token of thanks:
On a stained-glass window depicting Saint Nicholas, he substituted Germanic eagles for the three Lorraine alerions of the Lorraine coat of arms, and on a stained-glass window of Saint Joan of Arc, he simply replaced the shield of France with the shield of Wiesbaden.
Given its proportions, it is understandable that the deception failed in its purpose, provoking vehement protests from the donors of the windows and the population.
