THE EIFFEL TOWER ILLUMINATIONS WORKED FOR THE FIRST TIME LAST NIGHT
At nightfall, thousands of curious onlookers, flocking from all over Paris, gathered last night at the foot of the Eiffel Tower to be the first spectators of the predicted blaze. They firmly held the sidewalks and even part of the roadway along the Quai d'Orsay and the nearby avenues. When, at precisely 10:00 a.m., a red flame burst forth from the top of the gigantic wall, soon followed by the flashing of numerous brilliant stars and the appearance of tongues of flame licking the iron frame, lit by day, a huge cry of admiration erupted from the crowd. Whistles had earlier shown the impatience of some, they had not altered the beautiful indifference of the tower, but it suddenly seemed that, delayed, it rose more proudly towards the clouds that clung to its tip. Late in the night, the name of the popular manufacturer of the small 5 HP could be read on the night screen, from all the districts of Paris and the most distant suburbs.
