Among some of the welcome innovations in our police administration, we should note the organization of the corps of officers on motorcycles and in sidecars. These defenders of order are particularly feared by criminals who, for their evil cause, use all the improvements of modern industry and science.
These brave officers move quickly "for the needs of their service," but let us hope they do not follow the example of their American colleagues, whose exploits are recounted in the following dispatch:

Swampscott, July 4. Mrs. Coolidge, wife of the President of the United States, currently vacationing in Swampscott, was nearly knocked down while taking her morning walk by four police officers on motorcycles, who were traveling at an excessive speed. Mrs. Coolidge was only able to avoid them because she was preceded by a few secret police officers who were able to warn her just in time. Two other police officers, who were following her, had to swerve so quickly that they fell into a ditch.
An investigation is underway, and the motorcycle officers will undoubtedly be punished for speeding.
Do you see French officers "swinging around the bend" two colleagues charged with protecting the President... of the House or the Senate, since our head of state is single?
They would certainly be reprimanded, but not "punished for speeding": that is impossible in France, a country where the police are always right.

ROBERT OUDOT.
