NEW XENOPHOBIC INCIDENTS IN SHANGHAI
London, July 4 (Petit Paris dept.) A Reuters message from Shanghai reports new incidents in Swatow, where English and Japanese stores were looted following an anti-foreign demonstration. The Chinese authorities intervened with extreme inaction to restore order, and the poorly protected foreign colonies view the situation with concern. In Shanghai, three Japanese subjects were attacked in the city's native quarter; police detachments managed to rescue them from the crowd's threats and return them to their compound. Groups of demonstrators also attacked trams and buses during the day and seized food and milk supplies intended for the foreign colony. A little later, the crowd managed to enter the compound and interrupted tram traffic. A driver and a signalman were kidnapped by the demonstrators and taken to Chapeu for imprisonment. The Chinese authorities urgently sent soldiers to the scene, and the unfortunate men were immediately released. On the orders of the military authorities, trenches are currently being dug around Chapeu and barbed wire is being placed around the international concession for its protection. The message adds that a band of fifty coolies, including women, attacked and seriously injured British Detective Sergeant MacDonald while he was investigating intimidation allegedly complained of by a British firm. JAPAN'S ATTITUDE Tokio, July 4 (Havas Dept.) Although eager to abolish extraterritoriality in China, the Japanese Foreign Ministry believes it is impossible to discuss this issue as long as the current troubled situation persists, and emphasizes the fact that Washington's resolutions specify that a conference will be convened as soon as the situation permits. The Japanese Foreign Minister announces that he is not aware of any proposal from the United States to convene a conference on China.
