The Invention of the Pêle Mêle
OPERATION: When the pendulum passes over the stud (1), current is generated in electromagnet A, which attracts the cradle to the left via the piece of soft iron attached to the cradle. However, as soon as the pendulum leaves the stud (1), the attraction ceases and the cradle returns to its original position. The pendulum, continuing its movement, passes over the stud (2). Current is generated in electromagnet B, which attracts the cradle to the right under the same conditions as before. This produces a very regular back-and-forth movement of the cradle without disturbing the nurse, who is lounging in an armchair. (Communicated by Mr. Edmond Verve, in Saint-Louis, Marseille.)
