Mrs. Caillaux's Accident On the very day the Minister of Finance was elected Senator for Sarthe,
Mrs. Caillaux was the victim of a serious car accident.
She, along with one of her friends, Mrs. Mailhard, was returning from La Baule and was driving to Mamers, herself driving a car with a front-wheel drive. Suddenly, twenty-five kilometers from Angers, near the small town of Suette, and for reasons that could not be determined, probably a broken steering system, the car crashed into a tree on the shoulder of the road. Hearing the sound of the impact, farmers working nearby rushed to the aid of the two women. After receiving initial treatment on the spot from a doctor, both were taken to a clinic in Angers. Mrs. Caillaux's injuries, in particular, were serious. But it was immediately realized that they were not life-threatening. Moreover, her condition has continued to improve since then. One can understand the Minister of Finance's natural emotion upon learning of his wife's accident, but the end of the parliamentary session and the budget vote called him hastily to Paris, so he was unable to go immediately to the injured woman's bedside. He didn't arrive until a few days later. As for Madame Caillaux, as soon as she regained consciousness, it was to inquire about the results of the senatorial election.
