A Belgian missionary kidnapped by Chinese brigands
Brussels, 7. The missions of Scheut are informed that a missionary, who has been in China for fifteen years, Rev. Father Maurice de Olippale d'Alost, has been in the hands of Chinese brigands for forty-five days. Captured on January 21 last, during a visit he was making to a sick Christian, two leagues from his Christian home, the father was kidnapped by twenty-three brigands on horseback. Since then the soldiers have been pursuing the brigands, and the father is forced to accompany them on all their journeys day and night. According to the latest news received in Scheut, the father, who was able to send several notes to his confreres until February 4, was sold to another band of 200 brigands who crossed the Yellow River with him in the direction of the Ortos desert.

A mutiny of young girls
Naples, 7. Three hundred young girls, most of them very young, hospitalized in a penitentiary in Naples, have mutinied. As the police were sent to restore order, the young rebels found nothing better to do than to throw loose tiles at them on the roof of the establishment. The nuns charged with guarding these restless inmates found themselves locked in their cells. The causes of the mutiny were insignificant: it was a protest against the punishment incurred by three young prisoners, a punishment that their comrades considered unjust. The police arrested six of the most turbulent of these young people.
