Will the Vendée coast suffer the fate of the town of Ys?
LES SABLES-D'OLONNE, March 7. We have already reported the invasion of the sea on the Vendée coast at Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie. The sand dunes do not offer sufficient resistance to the raging waves that are crumbling them and the ground is collapsing to make way for the sea. The storm of February 26, after that of November 26, caused new damage. The line of dunes is becoming thinner and thinner and some buildings are now in danger. A hospital is only 50 centimeters from the water; the foundations of a villa are exposed. Another home will have to be evacuated because it is located sheer at the top of a sand quarry. Paths are also threatened with being affected. Behind the dunes are the towns of Saint-Gilles, Croix-de-Vie, the port of Havre-de-Vie, and it is understandable that the populations are worried. In forty years, the sea has gained a hundred meters at high tide.
