GREAT ROWING MATCHES Cambridge beats Oxford
London, March 28. A huge crowd gathered on the banks of the Thames to witness the famous annual race between the eight-oared teams of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Cambridge, favored by luck, chose the north bank of the river, better protected from the wind, which was blowing quite violently from the northeast. One mile from the start, Cambridge took the lead; and, two miles from the start, was eight lengths ahead. As Oxford's boat gradually filled with water due to the swell, the team was forced to abandon the race, much to the disappointment of the London public, the rowers being forced to swim to safety. Cambridge thus easily won the race, covering the four-mile course in 21 minutes and 50 seconds.
