The Wire to Cut the Lure

Mr. J. Howes, of the State of Ohio, attaches a brass wire to an electric machine. When someone near the device isn't telling the truth, the wire begins to move in a peculiar way.

Nothing but an electric machine
To which must be added
A sympathetic brass wire
And that's how it is in America
We can know the truth.

As long as the wire is motionless,
It means no one has lied,
But, if by chance it oscillates,
Its movement warns us.
Smelling some... needle in the rock,
The wire, which stirs and twists
Warns us that a liar is approaching
(He has never been caught in the wrong).

Now, the Press
To be controlled, very recently
had admitted the sensational feats
Of this magnificent instrument.
Unfortunately, we were unable
To carry out the experiment
Thanks to the extreme foresight
Of our subtle journalists who,
Not without some suspicion,
Had equipped themselves with wire cutters!

Pierre Manaut.
