L'Éclaireur du Dimanche - March 29, 1925

Jérome Viaud Mayor of Grasse (06)

Sunday, March 15th, was a historic day for the "City of Perfumes." From the first rays of the sun to the moment when myriad stars twinkled in the firmament, it was a succession of festivities to celebrate in style the New City that will rise tomorrow on the magnificent Rothschild estate. In this regard, it is interesting to recall that it was in 1887 that, attracted by our mild climate, Baroness Alice de Rothschild decided to spend a few months in Grasse. Seduced by the captivating charm of this privileged natural setting, she could not resist the desire to settle there permanently. On April 19th, 1888, she purchased a small olive garden a few meters from the Grand Hôtel, where a small country house stood. This small piece of land was to be the embryo of the immense and magnificent 135-hectare estate that the City of Grasse enjoys today. Indeed, the Société Civile Immobilière et de Reconstruction, headquartered in Reims, by becoming the owner of the Rothschild estate, will bring considerable development to the city of Grasse. It is currently subdividing this estate. A major network of grand boulevards, 9 to 10 meters wide, is being created. Public squares and parks, which will occupy a total area of 30 hectares, are planned. Water, electricity, gas, and sewer pipes will be installed. Villas, apartment buildings, and pavilions will rise from the ground tomorrow. In short, a new city is being born.
From the mists of the North, the Société Immobilière et de Reconstruction did not hesitate to come to the land of the sun to tackle this gigantic undertaking. We sincerely congratulate them.
This company, which provides payment facilities, has established prices according to a scale based on the location and layout of the lots. And these prices are extremely reasonable!
Currently, only Zone I is being subdivided, for which roadworks are currently underway. Land is being sold there from 10 francs per square meter.

A Historic Day
Immediately after the reception of the authorities at 9:30 a.m., the official procession formed in front of Villa Victoria. The entire population had gathered at this same point in the city to enter this area for the first time. It was a revelation for them, for everyone.
