Medal of the Society for the Encouragement of Good
It is a cherished tradition of "L'Eclaireur du Dimanche": to publish, each year, photographs of the brave workers who have earned the Lippert Legacy. The presentation of diplomas and cash donations took place last Saturday. Mr. Mari, Deputy Mayor, who delivered a moving speech, presided over the session. During the ceremony, he read out the following list of winners:
1.FORNERO-MENEI, rue Bautruch, Nice, merchants: Have devoted all their resources to founding and maintaining a hospice for sick and destitute elderly women. Deserve to be cited as examples for their spirit of dedication and sacrifice. Silver medal, 500 francs, and diploma.
2. CAROLINE GIANOLA, 14, rue de la Croix, Nice, seamstress: Although old and infirm, devotes part of her time to visiting the homes of sick elderly people to whom she provides assistance; model of dedication 200 francs and diploma.
3. MARIE DE CANTACUZÈNE, 34, boulevard Joseph-Garnier, Nice, lady from the foreign colony, dispossessed of all her possessions: Works, despite her advanced age, to provide for herself and for her elderly French teacher, who, now 93 years old, has been in her service for 70 years; dedication and courage beyond all praise. 100 francs and diploma.
4. LOUISE BRUSSO, 4, Place de la Halle-aux-Herbes, Nice, former market vendor: Widowed and elderly, 25 years ago, she took in a child who had lost her mother and been abandoned by her father, whom she raised as her own son; devotion and self-sacrifice. 100 francs and diploma.
5. THÉRÈSE DALMASSO, caretaker, 17, Boulevard Raimbaldi, Nice, widowed and with no other resources than the proceeds of her labor: 26 years ago, she adopted a ward of the Public Assistance and then her son, after she died; devotion and self-sacrifice. 100 francs and diploma.
6. JEAN PORTANELLI, 12, Rue Benoît-Bunico, Nice, painter-decorator: Father of four children, despite his heavy responsibilities, took in a little girl who had lost her mother and been abandoned by her father; Devotion and self-sacrifice. 100 francs and diploma.
7. MARIUS BONAFET, 10, rue de Orestis, Nice, day laborer: 4.5 years ago, he took in his two stepbrothers, orphaned by both parents and then aged 14 and 10; he raises them with paternal devotion; high moral character. 100 francs and diploma.
8. AMÉLIE SPANEDA, 3, rue Saint-Joseph, Nice, seamstress: Selflessly devoted to her own family of five children. Finds time to visit sick elderly people at home, providing them with assistance; dedication and self-sacrifice. 100 francs and diploma.
9. HORTENSE BENEDETTO, in Roquefort: Orphaned and barely 14 years old, she provides devoted care to her infirm grandparents; dedication and self-sacrifice. 100 francs and diploma.
10. AUGUSTINE LACHAMBRE, 8, boulevard Raimbaldi, Nice: For 25 years, she has served the same elderly and sick person, to whom she provides the most devoted care; a model of loyalty and selflessness. Bronze medal and diploma.
11. JEANNE LEONARD, 5, quai des Deux-Emmanuel, Nice: Serving the same people for 40 years; a model of loyalty and selflessness. Bronze medal and diploma.
