Terror in Bulgaria
A state of siege is declared throughout the country Belgrade, 18. Word from Sofla:
The government in Sofia, through its representatives abroad, has once again asked the major powers for permission to reinforce the army by ten thousand men, due to communist activity in connection with the latest attacks. Today, a notice proclaiming a state of siege was posted in Bulgaria. Order reigns throughout the country.
The entrances to Sofla are guarded by the army and the militia. Patrols stop all passersby, demanding identification.
Freedom of movement is restricted from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Public administrations and ministers' homes are under police surveillance. All day and night, the police searched suspect neighborhoods, blocking streets and arresting numerous agrarian and communist activists. The militia, which had been summoned, and the army provided almost exclusively for the city's security. Troops stationed in the provinces were directed toward the capital, whose garrison was sent to the western border with the supposed aim of arresting emigrants who had taken refuge in Serbian, Croatian, and Slovenian territory. The investigation into the attack continues. A bell ringer at the cathedral was arrested on suspicion of complicity in the attack.
According to unofficial sources, the Inter-Allied Military Commission has acquiesced to Bulgaria's request to increase its army to confront the Bolshevik threat.
An attempt at pronunciamiento IN PORTUGAL
Madrid, 18. - In Madrid, we do not have... No official or specific news concerning a revolutionary movement in Portugal, rumors of which have spread abroad, particularly in New York. The Portuguese Legation in Madrid and Spanish official circles say they have received no news of such a movement. In other circles with very close ties to Portugal and very well-informed, it is maintained, so far, that there is nothing to suggest that a revolutionary movement has broken out in Portugal. The news arriving from Lisbon at two o'clock on Sunday morning announces a military insurrectional movement - which occurred during the day on Saturday in the Rotunda Square in Lisbon. The government has taken measures to maintain order.
