THE HEROIC PIGEON Limoges, 19. "La France Militaire" announces that the carrier pigeon number 183-14 A. which, at Verdun, at the height of the battle, ensured several important connections, under heavy fire, has just died of old age, at the age of ten, at the dovecote of the pigeon company of Montoire (40 kilometers North of Tours); During the war, he had won this beautiful citation, today framed in the hall of honor of the 8th Engineer Regiment in Tours, below the stuffed pigeon 183, to perpetuate its memory: "On three different occasions, during the Battle of Verdun, ensured, under heavy fire, the rapid transport of very important messages. In particular, ensured the connections of Commander Raynal, defender of Fort Vaux, on June 3, 1916, at a time when his invested troops were deprived of all means of communication, despite the most unfavorable atmospheric conditions." This citation gave the right to the military ring diploma, equivalent to the military medal.
