Mr. Coolidge speaks Freedom is not given: it is acquired. It does not come to any people until that people have passed through all the stages that precede it. It is far from being a natural state, for while there are no conditions in which it is better to be a slave than to be free, there are many conditions in which it is easier to be a slave than to be free; and many have preferred such slavery rather than to bear the responsibility of liberty.
