A CANDIDATE FOR THE ENGLISH PARLIAMENT HAD PROMISED IF SUCCESSFUL TO KISS HIS VOTERS Elected, Sir Henry Curtiss Bennett pays part of his debt during a meeting organized in his honour London, Jan. 10 (d. Pet. Paris:) The great assize court lawyer, Sir Henry Curtiss Bennett, who was sent to Parliament by the Brentwood constituency at the last election, had allowed himself, at the beginning of the election campaign, to make imprudent promises. In a training oratorical exercise, he had notably undertaken, in the event of his success, to kiss all the women voters of his constituency. Today, during a demonstration organized in his honour, at Brentwood, the chairman of his committee inexorably reminded him of his promise. The women present not only applauded, but stamped their feet with enthusiasm, and the newly elected was summoned to comply. I do not renege on my promise, however imprudent it may have been, declared Sir Henry Curtiss Bennett very gallantly, and I am ready to keep it, I do not even ask for a delay. Let these ladies come forward. And there were, amidst the applause of the audience, numerous, long and tender embraces which, without a doubt, pleased the grand master and which, above all, have just ensured his re-election. It is fortunate, however, for the scrupulous deputy, that his 16,269 electors did not come forward on the platform to demand the kiss premis today!
