
THE BLACK TROOPS RECRUITMENT CASE
The jury has rendered its verdict. It first heard Mr. Alcide Delmont, lawyer for the civil party, who sought to establish that Mr. Diagne had been defamed and that through its news item, the newspaper Les Continents had damaged the cause of France and its colonial subjects. Then Mr. Advocate General Béguin, who requested the conviction of the manager, Mr. Jean Fanjeat. Finally, Mr. Ernest-Charles, presented the defendant's defense. The jury's response was affirmative, but with the admission of mitigating circumstances. By application of this verdict, the court sentenced Mr. Fanjeat to six months in prison, suspended. 1,500 francs fine and 2,000 francs in damages to Mr. Diagne; She also ordered the publication of the judgment, at the condemned man's expense, in Les Continents and in five Parisian newspapers.
