A donation of 1 million for poor students Mr. Baptiste Sauberan, a Frenchman who made his fortune in Buenos Aires, recently came to Paris on a trip.
There, he observed, gathered information, and understood that the middle class had been the most affected by the war. Many of them can no longer provide their children with the means to continue their studies. Before leaving, Mr. Sauberan therefore decided to make a donation of one million francs to the University of Paris, in order to create a student loan for students. In order not to exhaust this capital, poor students will be required to repay the money borrowed when their studies are finished. A special committee has been set up to control requests and distribute the funds.
An honorary committee Mr. Sauberan is a former student who became a merchant. He has nevertheless retained, as we see, a great love for the University and he proves it. The donation he made is significant; also, the special committee has members as important as Messrs. Herriot, Poincaré, Jèze and Appel.
Until now, however, the Students' Association, which appears to be the most interested in this matter, has not yet been invited to send delegates to this commission.
It seems however that no distribution can be made without the collaboration of the students and it is thought that this error will be quickly repaired.
