The solemn reception at the Soviet Embassy in London Having returned to London yesterday for lunch, Mr. Rakowsky received guests in the evening at his embassy. It was to celebrate the anniversary of the Russian Revolution, and the representatives of Moscow had neglected nothing to ensure that the reception would count in the annals of pomp and gentry. In the main hall, a few proletarians received the guests who, climbing the grand staircase, were officially admitted to the party by Mr. and Mrs. Rakowsky. All the representatives of the nations who were present rubbed shoulders with the typists and the staff of the Soviet embassy. Many political and literary figures accepted the invitation. Recognized among them were Messrs. H. G. Wells, Bernard Shaw, the former Labor ministers, with the exception of Mr. Ramsay MacDonald who was unable to attend. Mr. Oswald Mosley, Lord Curzon's son-in-law, had been keen, by his presence, to contradict his father-in-law's policy. |
