The abolition of the investiture for noble titles

Mr. René Renoult, Keeper of the Seals, yesterday tabled a bill in the Chamber abolishing the investiture of noble titles in the Chancellery.

In the explanatory statement, the Keeper of the Seals stated:

There was no serious fiscal reason for maintaining in our laws an institution which, having become more or less theoretical, nevertheless retains under the Republic an official character as a title of nobility.

There is no question of abolishing in everyday life the use of the title of nobility which can subsist there as an element of distinction of a particular nature. We are therefore not proposing to repeal all of the legislation on noble titles.
The Republic has shown through more than fifty years of existence that it has nothing to fear from this survival of the past. We only believe that it is appropriate, by removing the investiture in the Chancellery, to remove all official character from them.
