Where we do not prevent the little ones from dying

The Work will never tire of repeating it: the rarer the little children of France become, the more the need arises to protect those who are there from death.
On how to defend them against the Killer, who should give us lessons and preach by example, if not the Public Assistance? Children are entrusted to it, or abandoned, by the thousands, whose rearing and education it could, with the enormous resources at its disposal, ensure in a model way.
But we are far from that! Emmanuel Bourcier's investigation in the Nièvre has already revealed painful facts to us. Alas! it will undoubtedly reveal others to us.
And the statistics - the appalling statistics show that, in some of the centers to which the Assistance directs its infants, death quickly mows down 75, if not 99%, of them.

The pontiffs of the Assistance can well, after that, meet in commissions, discuss seriously the birth rate and infant mortality, take measures on paper and give the country, with solemn warnings, advice often more childish than "childish". Are we not entitled to say to them:

But you are also responsible for raising children. How do you go about it? And what results do you obtain? Now the results are obvious, and they are deplorable: a hecatomb of newborns and a small army of pariahs.
It is true that the Public Assistance - we are talking about that of the Seine - will object:
The children we take in are tainted and marked in advance by Destiny.
But where would be the merit in saving only robust children and colossi-babies? And why would the excellent effects observed elsewhere remain forbidden to the Parisian Assistance, if there were not, quite obviously, a question of method?
