DADDY, THE LITTLE BOATS…

The sun was gilding the Tuileries Gardens. A walker, with a good-natured face and frock coat, gazed with tender eyes at a little boy who was launching a tiny sailboat into the water of the basin. But the line that connected the frail skiff to the shore slipped from the child's hands and the little boat drifted away.
The good bourgeois rushed to the aid of the boat in danger. He leaned over as far as he could and, at the risk of diving into the basin, managed to grab the mooring rope.
In his large hands, he took the sailboat, contemplated it for a moment. It's a three-masted square-rigger, he said, and very well-rigged, by Jove! Nothing is missing, from the brigantine to the little cockatoo. Then, handing the toy back to the child: The wind is going to rise. Cast off the sails and hold the rope firmly between your fingers. Learn that a captain is brought before a court martial when he loses his ship...
And Admiral Jaurès*, deputy of the Seine, resumed his interrupted walk.

Louis Jaurès, elected on the same list as Léon Blum and younger brother of Jean Jaurès (1859-1914), deputy and socialist leader, assassinated in Paris.
