United States Would Not Approve Geneva Protocol WASHINGTON, October 4. The Chicago Tribune states that the United States will never permit an international agreement adopted by foreign powers to threaten to infringe upon national sovereignty in the settlement of their internal problems, such as that of immigration, for example. Moreover, the American Congress has had its last word on this question, and no international agreement which would contradict the present law would be likely to be approved. So long as Mr. Coolidge's administration is in power, the United States will not be bound by the terms of the protocol. And even under a new administration, it is considered doubtful whether a sufficient number of votes can be obtained in the Senate to approve the protocol. Politically, the attitude of Japan at Geneva has strengthened Mr. Coolidge's chances of election, while it has diminished those of Mr. Davis, who is an ardent supporter of the League of Nations. |
