IN HONOR OF CLÉMENT ADER
L’Écho de Paris is honored to have contributed to bringing out of the shadows, where he has always and too modestly pleased to live, our brilliant fellow citizen Clément Ader, the man who, at the Satory camp, on October 14, 1897, made the first "heavier than air" take off from the ground The airplane and its steam engine created from scratch by Ader have been described many times. We need only recall that it was due to the skepticism of certain ministers of war that France did not use the marvelous invention. This does not detract from the merit of the Wright brothers and Santos-Dumont, who, a few years later, created the artificial bird without knowing anything about the work of their predecessor. However, great festivals are celebrated today in Ader's native country. It is in Muret (Haute-Garonne), where the great Frenchman still resides.
