On the sidelines of tennis. Alain Gerbault

ON THE SIDE OF TENNIS

ALAIN GERBAULT will leave New York in a week to sail to Bermuda

A letter received yesterday morning from the bold navigator, Alain Gerbault, gives us the following news on his projects:
New York, October 18. Alain Gerbault will leave New York on the 25th of this month to go to the Bermuda Islands. His boat, the Fire-Crest, completely refurbished for the trifle of 100,000 francs, will take him alone to these fortunate islands.

The Fire-Crest, with its new mast, its new rigging and its copper-covered hull, will remain in Bermuda for quite a long time and will be the guest of the C.O. Yacht Club. After a three-month stay, the hero of the Atlantic crossing will leave for the Panama Canal and from there across the Pacific…

In New York, Gerbault witnessed the departure of the Greek ship Karkaria, which was supposed to go around the world. Its owner allowed visitors to visit his boat for a small fee. It was a simple lifeboat with a makeshift cabin. Needless to say, fifteen days after its departure, the Karkaria made a sensational entry into the port of New York towed by a fishing boat…

A follower and friend of Gerbault, Bill Notting, who crossed the Atlantic fifteen years ago, has not given any news of him for three months. Having left with three companions on a schooner from the coast of Norway for America via Greenland, we have not heard anything more about the boat..."

This month Gerbault's book Seul à travers l'Atlantique will be published. And we will see the champion again, next year, playing tennis again. R. S.
