The Marriage of Monsieur Clemenceau

Mr. Clemenceau's Marriage

Mr. Clemenceau is eighty-four years old this week.
That is why he has just announced to one of his friends that he is getting married.
He was showing him around his property in Saint-Vincent-sous-Gard, in Vendée:
— Ah! my dear friend, we are going to go through the kitchen. Because to enter his home, a good Vendéen goes through his kitchen. And he eats there. And I eat there. And a good Vendéen marries his cook. And I am going to marry my cook. Isn't that right Eugénie?...
— Oh! Mr. President!...
— Yes, I will marry Eugénie. Oh! not on earth, but in heaven. You will object that I may not go to heaven? But Eugénie, she will go. And when she is there and I present myself to Saint Peter, she will say to him: "Mr. Saint Peter, you put me in paradise so that I may have total happiness. But I would never have total happiness if I could not live all eternity with my earthly flirt who is Mr. President. So, we must let Mr. President in." That is how I will enter Paradise, where I will marry Eugénie, like a good Vendéen. Isn't that right, Eugénie?...
—Oh, Mr. President!...
