The Red Cross

Vers la Santé, the organ of the League of Red Crosses, reminds us, in its latest issue, that the institution of the Red Cross is sixty years old this year.
It was, in fact, in 1864 that the delegates of the principal States of the world signed the first Geneva Convention which, later revised, today constitutes the basis of the code of war of civilized peoples.

A distinguished French jurist, Louis Renault, proclaimed that the Convention of the Red Cross constituted the most important international act of the nineteenth century. Bluntschli wrote that it could be considered as one of the noblest conquests of the modern spirit.

What more can be said of the "symbol of international assistance and the highest humanitarian ideal", the Red Cross?
Did not this "god of the heart" contain, as early as 1864, this other idea, the League of Nations, in which so many peoples place all their hope today,

The Red Cross is sixty years old
