The Saint-Paul-de-Léon gold trafficking case

THE SAINT-POL-DE-LEON GOLD TRAFFICKING CASE

There are currently about a hundred accused

BREST, October 11. (From our Brest editorial staff.) - The investigation opened more than a month ago by the Saint-Politaine gendarmerie brigade is continuing.

The remarkable activity deployed in this circumstance by Mr. Angebaud and his gendarmes has not slackened for a single moment. It is always the same pursuits on horseback or by bicycle through the countryside, by muddy and difficult paths, the same painful but fruitful investigations. The proof is that 15 days ago, we announced 70 indictments and, at the present time, we can count about a hundred.

One can easily see the tact and skill necessary for this task. The offenders are on their guard and it is, most often, by trickery that the police obtain confessions.
It also happens that the newly accused indicate others without having wanted to. A person denounced by a previous accused believes to have been sold by a third individual whom he cites. In this case, the information is not lost, as one might think.

Among the new recruits, a horse dealer from Plouescat is mentioned: Father Abolivier who flied, on a large scale, the brokerage of gold; two jewelers from Saint-Pol engaged in the same traffic: Mr. Godec and Mrs. widow Daniélou. But the best deal was, without a doubt, the indictment of the butcher Jean Le Nan, established in Saint-Pol, at the Croissant de Plougoulm. During his comings and goings from farm to farm, Le Nan did some gold deals, which we may say. Mr. Angebaud had a devious adversary in him and it was only after a long surveillance that he was able to catch his man.

And the investigation is far from over. It would still require two or three months of work. The police know many brokers, buyers, sellers or informers who will be caught without delay.

The progress of information is now guiding the searches on the Plouescat side... we can say no more.

Mr. Mallet, commissioner, Le Gall chief inspector, Cosquer and Thomas, inspectors of the mobile police, are continuing their investigations begun on September 22 by virtue of a rogatory commission from the Morlaix Public Prosecutor's Office.
They also have a lot to do. Mr. Campion, investigating judge, can be satisfied with the results obtained by his colleagues.
