Retired mascots

"Bella" and "Berta" are two Belgian cows that played their small part in the war and that a large English landowner has just welcomed into one of his estates so that they can live out their old age happily and end their lives in grass up to their bellies.
In 1914, a soldier of the 2nd Scottish Guards found these animals near Ypres in a pasture turned over by machine-gun fire, and the only survivors of a large herd crushed under shells.
During a truce in the harsh battle, the two cows were enthusiastically named mascots of the battalion. From then on, they followed the regiment wherever it was sent, grazing peacefully in the line of fire and always spared by the "big blacks". In the trenches, we can judge whether their milk was welcome!
Before finding the final retirement where they have just arrived. Bella and Berta shared the food and board of the royal herd in Windsor Park, then Hyde Park welcomed them in turn.
But first, they had been to glory, since the division of the guard, crossing London triumphantly after the armistice, the two good beasts had their place in the parade.
