With a broomstick, she kills her sleeping husband

THE CRIME OF A SHREW

With a broomstick, she kills her sleeping husband

LYON, October 8. - The Piana couple had lived for several months at 7, rue Alexandre-Boutin, in Villeurbanne. The husband, a factory worker, was hardworking and generally respected; the wife, jealous and cantankerous, made continual scenes with him. Yesterday evening, at 9 o'clock, a more violent quarrel broke out during which Piana, rightly irritated, jostled the shrew a little. The wife's fury seemed to have subsided, Piana went to bed, but when he was asleep, the wife, armed with a broomstick, dealt him a terrible blow. The husband, getting up, tried in vain to defend himself; the wife struck like a madwoman with repeated blows until Piana fell bloody and lifeless.
However, the neighbors, attracted by the victim's cries for help, alerted the police. Piana, transported in a coma to the Hôtel-Dieu, succumbed shortly after to a fractured skull. The murderer, slightly injured, was hospitalized in Villeurbanne.
Following the interrogation of the police commissioner, the woman does not appear to be in full possession of her mental faculties; she will probably be interned in the Bron lunatic asylum.

A jealous man

Jealous of seeing the hairdresser Drier preferred by Miss Yvonne F...., eighteen years old, daughter of a cafe owner on the rue de Chalon, an Italian, about twenty years old, known only by the first name of Julio, beat him up in front of the bar, then stabbed a dog that was defending Drier to death.
The culprit fled with four compatriots pursued by seven officers. During the pursuit, the latter were shot at by revolvers that did not hit them. Julio was able to disappear. Only Sylvio Caloniatto, aged twenty-nine, and Pietro Vernoski, aged nineteen, were arrested.

Assault after the ball

At a ball on rue Victorien-Sardou, in Saint-Cyr, Miss Marguerite Barret had danced until quite late in the night. Accompanied by two of her dancers, she was about to return home when a stranger, whose advances she had rejected during the evening, jumped on her and stabbed her in the left temple. The wound was serious and it was feared that the victim would lose her eye. As for the culprit, whose name is René Descortis and who is aged twenty, he has been arrested.
