A Colossal Memorial

The sculptor Gutzon Berglum has undertaken, with the help of a number of collaborators, the execution on the almost perpendicular slope of Stone Mountain, near the city of Atlanta, in the State of Georgia, of a memorial of colossal dimensions, perpetuating the Civil War.

The work is progressing rapidly, and one can get an idea of the dimensions of this monstrous relief when one knows that twenty people could easily take their places on the brim of the hat of General Lee, the commander in chief of the southern armies, and whose head is, at the present time, almost completed.

This head covers an area of thirty feet square, and the head of President Davis' horse measures fifty feet from the tip of the ear to the tip of the nostrils, which represents. the height of a four-story house. One hundred and twenty people would easily find room with their tables! to dine there, along the neck of President Davis's horse,

So far, there has been removed, in the form of debris from the chisel blows of the master sculptor and his assistants, a total of 815 tons of stone. This stone is made of an extraordinarily hard granite, and the granite wall from which the memorial is cut rises to a height of several hundred meters above the surrounding plain.
