Three Parisians: Mr. Jean Maunoury, of the Yacht-Club de France and Mrs. Maunoury, and Mr. Jules Guillo Lohan, of the Canoe-Club de France, have just accomplished a feat that leaves far behind the most daring sporting excursions. These intrepid sportsmen who had left Marseille on July 28, arrived at the port of Nice on Saturday, July 23. Mounted on two yawls, "Mektoub Inch'Allah" and "Viking" whose main characteristics, except for the sail, recall the "Eskimo kayak", they left our great Mediterranean port carrying more than a hundred kilos of baggage: three tents, three mattresses, food for several days and several cameras From there, they continued their route via Sainte-Maxime, Théoule and Cannes, where they arrived on August 20. The next day, they set off again in the direction of Nice, but at the mouth of the Var, a strong easterly wind prevented them from continuing their navigation. They had to go ashore and camp while waiting for a lull. On the morning of the 23rd, around 6 o'clock, the weather having become more manageable, they finally set course for Nice and landed just in time to avoid the squall that was rising again. Thus our sportsmen had covered a distance of 445 kilometers, with nearly 80 landings. The weather was not always very favorable to them; seventeen days of heavy seas including six days of rain. After a short stay in our city, whose welcome they were pleased to praise, the navigators separated. Mr. Guillo Lohan has returned to Paris where the two unused skiffs have been sent. As for Mr. and Mrs. Jean Maunoury, they have set sail again for a cruise to Menton and as far as Italy, from where they will then return to Paris. We wish them a happy journey. |
