The end of gondolas. These long black boats with high prows that the Venetian boatmen, standing at the back, drove with such skill, will disappear. The municipality of Venice has decided to replace them, within ten months, with electric boats. We will no longer see removals or funeral convoys in gondolas along the canals. We will no longer see the "salad gondola", because it was by boat that prisoners were transported. The cry of the gondoliers will be succeeded by the trembling of the engines which seems, on the water, particularly noisy. Perhaps it will be more practical, but lovers of the picturesque will miss the gondolas and the gondoliers. |
