The question of Christian schools in Turkey is said to be nearing its solution PARIS, September 3. Our colleague l'Intransigeant publishes the following dispatch: CONSTANTINOPLE, August 28. - The rumor has been circulating in recent days that French Catholic schools have been authorized to reopen, after having agreed to remove from their premises all emblems relating to worship. The congregations have agreed to remove all religious emblems and to abstain from all propaganda - non-existent, moreover - on condition that they can keep a very small crucifix. It is believed that Mgr Dolès, former apostolic nuncio to the Sublime Porte, currently in Constantinople, has made representations to the diplomatic representative of Angora in Istanbul. It is known that negotiations are also underway in Paris between the French government and the Turkish representative. The ratification of the Treaty of Lausanne by the French Chambers may give hope for a prompt and favourable solution to the school incident. 30,000 children have been deprived of instruction since last year, as a result of this unfortunate dispute, |
