A FUNNY CEREMONY TAKES PLACE EVERY YEAR IN BINCHE
THE INHABITANTS WEARED IN THEIR WONDERFUL HEADWEAR OF WHITE FEATHERS
IN THE MORNING, PEASANTS, WEARING GROTESQUE MASKS, CROSS THE STREETS
In Binche, a small town in Belgium located about 15 kilometers from Mons, a ceremony takes place every year whose origins date back to 1540, when a party was organized by Maris of Hungary to celebrate the conquest of Peru. On this occasion, men and women wear eccentric feather hairstyles, each of which costs at least 1,000 francs, and wear Peruvian Indian and conquistador costumes. They carry small baskets loaded with oranges which they throw over the heads of spectators. Any disguise other than Peruvian is prohibited.
