THE DOG AT THE CONCIERGERIE At the time of the Terror, the dogs of the Conciergerie played a big role. It appears, however, that they were not as inexorable as their masters if we consider the following trait:One of these dogs stood out from all the others for its strength, size and intelligence. This cerberus was called Ravage. During the night, he was responsible for guarding the courtyard of the Préau. Prisoners had made such a hole to escape that nothing stood in the way of their project except the vigilance of Ravage and the alarm he could give. Ravage kept silent, and the next day it was noticed that an assignat of one hundred sous had been tied to his tail with a small note on which were written these words: "We can bribe Ravage with one hundred sous and a bundle of sheep's trotters." . > Ravage, walking and thus publishing his venality, was a little disconcerted by the crowds that formed around him and the bursts of laughter that came from all sides. He got off for this little humiliation and a few hours in the dungeon. |
