It took the ingenuity, the great initiative and the great talent of Paul Tissier, this admirable artist so esteemed in Nice... and elsewhere, to create an evening as magnificent as that of March 19! It is difficult to realize the considerable difficulties, the obstacles which arise at every moment in the face of such a development. The amount of work provided by Paul Tissier is immense. Because this artist drew all the decorative motifs with his own hand, it was he who directed, for several months, all the work on this reconstruction. They were rewarded, because for one evening, the name of Paul Tissier came with enchantment to the lips of thousands of people. The spectacle produced was absolutely marvelous. It constituted a vision of art, the likes of which we rarely see. He brought China and Japan back to life before our dazzling eyes, with its colors, its strange songs that Mr. Matsuyama brought to honor in Europe, its seductive or fierce dances, its ancient legends and their dream characters. The first part of the program included: Japanese Fencers by MM. Phu and Ton. Chinese popular theater, MM. Dong, Ghieu, Kai, Phat, Tho, An, Ngoi, Hag, Nmon and Luu. The famous tightrope walkers Yamamoto and Koyoshi. We then applaud: The procession of the fairy princess, and the popular dances (Mrs. Seihare M. Takata, from the Tokyo Imperial Theater) and ancient songs (Mr. Yoshinori Matsuyama). Cherry blossom dances (Mlle Pari, and Japanese ballet). Japanese legends. Fantastic visions: spirits; living lanterns; larvae; the shadows; Miss Loïe Fuller’s Dance School; masks; Lion; the Samurai and the genius of the forest (Messrs. Phu, Tho, Tuc, Thu and Ton; Miss Darnova and the dancer O'Breissi). The battle of chrysanthemums and the lantern procession ended the show itself, before the Japanese ball and the “Fémina” costume competition began, chaired by Mr. André de Fouquières. Once again, the modern Petrone strives with infinite good grace to award the prize to the most beautiful. The choice is difficult, because it is not, strictly speaking, a question of costumes; these are pieces worthy of museums, kimonos and rare dresses, which are submitted to the appreciation of the jury. The European ball is finally resuming its rights and after this wonderful trip to the Far East, the tangos, the foxtrots and the shimmys remind us that we are in Nice and not in Tokyo or Beijing. Throughout the evening, the excellent music of the Conservatory, under the direction of Mr. Botti, its conductor, was successfully heard. At 1 a.m., the prizes for the Costume Competition are announced; here is the prize list: This magical evening is one of the most beautiful we have had during the season and we are pleased to congratulate Mr. Paul Tissier, the organizer of this party, as well as Mr. A. Donadei, who was the great entertainer. |
