The painter Cormon dies in a car accident

Paris, 21. The painter Cormon, professor at the School of Fine Arts, member of the Institute, was hit yesterday afternoon, rue de Rome, by a taxi.

The master, who suffered several fractured ribs, a torn lung and a torn scalp, was taken back to his home, 33 bis, rue de Moscow, where he died in the evening. Until the end, he retained all his knowledge, and asked that the driver of the car not be worried, because he was not responsible for the accident.

Born in Paris on December 22, 1845, Mr. Fernand-Anne Piestre, known as Fernand Cormon, son of a playwright whose plays achieved great success, had been a student of Cabanel, Fromentin, and Portaels.

He began at the Salon of 1870, with the “Noces de Niebelungen”, a painting which, greatly noticed, was rewarded. Since then, he has continued to exhibit with French Artists, and obtained numerous awards, notably in 1873, 1887 and 1889.

Among the artist's works, let us cite: the “Death of Ravana”, “Caïn (purchased by the State, and currently in the Luxembourg Museum): the “Bear Hunt (Musée de Saint-Germain”): “ The Victors of Salamis” (Rouen Museum); numerous portraits, notably those of Messrs. Marcel Desprez, Carrier-Belleuse, Henri Maret, Doctor Hayem du P. Didon, M.: Loubet, the latter in Luxembourg.

We also owe the artist the decorations of the Museum, the town hall of Tours, etc.

Member of the Institute, professor-head of workshop at the School of Fine Arts, Fernand Cormon was Commander of the Legion of Honor.
