During a hunt organized near Rye, on the Kent coast, the stag, pursued by the crew and closely followed by the pack, suddenly ran towards the shore and threw itself into the sea. Some dogs followed

It swam away and, no doubt, was about to sink offshore when it was seen by a small French boat which was passing in the area. The fishermen took the animal on board and returned to the coast of France with their unexpected capture.

The adventure could have ended there, unpleasant only for the English hunters. But it didn't take long for it to get tougher. The boat, the Saint-Pierre, upon arriving in Etaples, was surprised to see customs intervene.

The latter claimed to consider the arrival of this deer as an importation of game during prohibited times. The fishermen defended themselves, arguing that the animal was a wreck collected as such.

We had to refer it to Paris. Furthermore, the English crew claimed the beast. Finally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that the boat, at the time of capture, was in the wrong, being in English territorial waters. Fortunately, everything will work out in the end.
