IN MY OPINION
In the general assembly held last Sunday by the Free Union of Household Workers, a wish was voted unanimously, asking "that the word domestic" be deleted from all official texts and replaced by the words "employee of House ".
This clearly proves that words have no other meaning than that which is given to them; how is the title of “servant” more or less flattering, more or less humiliating than that of “employee”? Domestic? But this is precisely the title with which all our great lords liked to adorn themselves in the past; and did not Cardinal de Polignac, to whom the king had just promised a pension of 6,000 livres, hasten to reply that, “although he was overwhelmed with his graces, he could not believe himself perfectly happy until when he would have the honor of being her servant”? Etymologically, there is no nobler, more touching expression, "domestic", is it not everything that is linked to the house, to the family, just as there is a "domestic" happiness and honor? ", For example... But precisely, we have arrived at this desolate moment where masters and servants no longer consider themselves to be part of the same house, where servants lose interest in their masters' family. Whether there was a fault of one or the other, very probably a fault of both, what appears certain is that the servants' crisis is first and foremost a crisis of confidence. There is too much necessary intimacy between people who constantly live together under the same roof for the relationships between masters and servants to be those of ordinary employers and employees. At every moment, I receive complaints which point out to me traits of ingratitude of certain servants, and their increasing demands; but, do you believe that the number is less and less justified of recriminations motivated by the hardness of heart, the cold severity of certain masters? This is where the evil lies, this is when devotion and affection give way to contempt and hatred. Couldn't the famous formula on the "virtues that are required in a servant" be turned around too often today, and first mention the virtues that servants demand of their masters? Masters need servants, but servants also need masters: so let them not approach each other with threats in their mouths, let them stop considering each other as enemies. After that, whether the servant is called a domestic worker, or servant, it is not the words that it is ever important to reform, it is the morals.
