A city taken by the Ku Klux Klan
Yesterday we reported on the capture of the town of Herrin, in Connecticut, by bands of the Ku Klux Klan. Despite the arrival of fifteen companies of regular soldiers and the proclamation of martial law, affiliates of the K.K.K. were still, yesterday evening, in possession of the town hall, and refused to give in to the summons of Colonel Culbertson.
All visitors were prohibited from entering the city until Tuesday. This defense will be prolonged if the city is not pacified at this time. The soldiers guarding the town are armed with machine guns and have received strict instructions from Governor Len Small not to hesitate to use them in an emergency. Street battles continue, especially at night; shots are exchanged, and minds in both parties are still in a dangerous state of overexcitement.
