A COMMUNIST VETO to the inauguration of a monument LORIENT, July 5. - Serious incidents have just occurred in Quimper among the teaching staff. On the initiative of Mr. Canevet, school director in Pont-Labbé, a subscription made it possible to erect, at the Quimper normal school, a monument in memory of the 169 teachers from Finistère who fell on the field of honor and its inauguration was to take place on Wednesday. However, at the general assembly of the association the day before, around fifty communist teachers arrived at the meeting while their comrades were very few in number. The entire old office was replaced by communists. The communists then declared that they would not tolerate at the monument ceremony either the Marseillaise or the songs of school children, nor, in the speeches, any passage exalting the idea of homeland, devotion or sacrifice. Informed of these facts, the prefect of Finistère, Mr. Desmars, who was to preside over the solemnity, decided that it would not take place and that it was postponed to a later date. (Newspaper.) |
