BETWEEN US The impact of the Olympic Games can only increase the popularity of sports. They already hold a large place in our society. But do we suspect the role they play in small towns and villages? The sports societies, all decorated with the name of club, have replaced the music and orpheons of yesteryear. As we were proud of the solo piston or the tenor, today we pride ourselves on the local football ace, or the runner or the bicycle. Last summer, I found myself, one Sunday, in a small town in Savoie. That day there was a great football game where the country's team competed against that of a neighboring country. As the sports field was the only sunny place in the entire region and it was very hot, I preferred to go and cool off in a pretty meadow bordered by a clear stream and where magnificent chestnut trees provided delicious shade. When I arrive, what do I see walking together, fraternally? The priest and president of the radical-socialist circle. I had the opportunity to get to know both of them, separately, of course, because in town they hardly saw each other. They understood my astonishment and explained their encounter to me. Football had left the circle and the church deserted. All the residents, men and women, were at the sports field. The president and the priest had been abandoned by their respective flocks. And both of them lament before me: - I no longer have anyone at my vespers! They were both touching, basically, two priests who saw their worship abandoned. I guessed that a sympathy had arisen between them. When I left them, I was convinced that she could only grow. Now, I have learned, on Sundays, in this small town, the president of the radical-socialist circle attends, the only faithful, the vespers of the priest, after which the priest goes to the circle, the only customer, picket the president.
