The inventor of the fiery ray returns to England (From our private correspondent) London, May 24. English public opinion was moved by the thought that the famous discovery of Mr. Grindel Matthews, the inventor of the so-called "death ray", could be monopolized by a foreign power, in this case France. Admiral Kerr was made, in Parliament. and with the government, the champion of the English scientist, to whom the large aircraft manufacturer Instone offers unlimited financial assistance to carry out his experiments. Mr. Grindell Matthews, claiming to have the right to suspend his negotiations with the French inventor, has just returned to London. He has seen important figures from the Air Ministry today, and experiments will take place Monday afternoon in his laboratory at Hareword Place. He carried out the following experiment in front of a journalist: on a table constructed so as not to conduct electricity, a glass ashtray was placed, above which a metal tube containing powder was placed. . As soon as the ray is directed at the device, the powder catches fire, and although the glass is an insulator, the table is affected by the ray. As for the defense of London by means of a protective network within which the influence of the ray would be exercised, the costs would be very high. Mr Matthews is already talking about £3 million. But Mr. Matthews will have a serious competitor. A certain Doctor Wall, lecturer at the Faculty of Science at Sheffield, announces that he has just discovered a similar process by which it is possible to transport electrical energy at a distance without the means of any conducting wire, this which allows him to stop planes. Doctor Wall immediately communicated his invention to the Ministry of War and Aeronautics. R.L. |
