SAINT-RAPHAEL. A combined exercise between the defense troops and the squadron's landing companies took place in Saint-Raphaël on the night of May 23. Vice-Admirals Fatou, Commander-in-Chief of the Maritime Borders; Lanxade, maritime prefect, and General Querette, commanding the subdivision, went to Saint-Raphaël to inspect the defense works and follow the phases of the exercise, which, started at midnight, ended at 3 hours in the morning, and was very successful. Vice-Admiral Fatou, Commander-in-Chief of the maritime borders, accompanied by Captain Goybet, then went to the airship center at Cuers-Pierrefeu and visited the “Mediterranean” and the other airships. -The inhabitants of Valescure have just, through a petition covered with numerous signatures, drawn the attention of the municipality to the great danger which threatens the town of Saint-Raphaël due to the total absence of any means of extinguishing the fires. In the North of France where the risk of fire is much lower than here, there are fire engines and special teams in all towns. In Saint-Raphaël we lull ourselves in the sweet hope that fires will not come and it is only after a terrible conflagration that we will begin to take the necessary precautions. Like every year, the cheerful Boulouris district will be in jubilation on June 29 and 30, on the occasion of the Saint-Jean festival. The Committee has just been formed and has already developed its most varied program, which will be in no way inferior to that of previous years. We can announce the participation of the Touristes de l'Estérel, the excellent municipal music of Saint-Raphaël, as well as the Tambourinaires du Var group. |
